First Birthday Party Ideas and Traditions

Mon, Jun 25 2012 8:30 am

Celebrating baby’s first birthday is an important and very fun milestone. To make the occasion special for your little one, consider some of these special traditions:

• Make a smash cake or cupcake for the birthday child, that he or she can make as much of a mess with as they want.

• Take a family photo on the child’s birthday.

• Make him or her the guest of honor in a special chair decorated with balloons, streamers, and other party decorations.

• Get a special plate that each family member could use on their birthday.

• Each birthday, read a special book, such as On the Night You Were Born.

• Start a notebook for birthday guests to sign each year.

• Bring the birthday boy or girl breakfast in bed.

• Each year mark your child’s new height on a height chart or special spot on the wall. You could also add a photo by each year’s mark.

• Create a bottle of wishes - ask guests to write a wish down for the birthday child. You could also add to it each year.

• Make a birthday scrapbook with snapshots from the party, guests, invite, cards, and list of gifts.

• Take a birthday photo with a print or cutout of the age they are turning.

• Plant a tree and take a picture of it every year.

• Make hand and foot prints.

• Make a time capsule and add things every year, to be opened on your child’s 18th birthday.

• Write a letter to the birthday child containing information and stories from the previous year. Do one for every year and give to your child when they are older.

• Buy a special birthday hat and take a picture every year with the hat on.

• Ask each party guest to write down one thing they love about the birthday child and make a booklet of them.

• Creatively display photos from your child’s first year.

• Put together a DVD slideshow containing photos and videos from the first year.

• Make a special birthday tablecloth by stamping handprints and footprints along with the date. Add to it each year.

• Decorate the house while your child is sleeping so they will wake up surprised and excited.
