As the founder of HALO Innovations and a SIDS father, I am excited to launch our very own blog!  As many of your already know, I lost my daughter to SIDS in 1991 and have committed my life to raising awareness about safe sleep for babies to prevent other parents from experiencing the same unimaginable loss of a child.   It is my intention that this blog – Crib Notes – will serve as a resource for parents, grandparents and caregivers of babies and toddlers. 

One of the most daunting tasks as a mother-to-be is figuring out all the stuff you need. Sure, all you really need is food, a place to sleep, clothes, diapers and a car seat, but what about all those other nice-to-haves?  The retailers are certainly very helpful at suggesting products to add to your registry list, but when it comes down to it, what do you really need beyond the obvious essentials?

When our second child was born on March 13th 2012, we wondered how our three and a half year old son would react and anticipated that things would be hard for a while. We were right. There's nothing quite like the soft, delicate skin of a baby. And nothing like a cranky infant irritated by eczema, diaper rash, dermatitis, or another skin condition. While your baby is perfect, your baby's skin may not be. Many babies are prone to skin irritation in the first few months after birth. Our friends at the National Eczema Association shared with us a list of frequently asked questions about Eczema and sensitive skin that we thought you might find helpful.

When our daughter, Rachel, was born, it was the culmination of a dream -- and a lot of hard work.  Not just the labor (which was hard enough!); my husband and I had also spent six long, frustrating and emotionally exhausting years waging war against infertility in order to start our family.  That day, holding my new baby in my arms, I felt profoundly thankful that I was finally blessed with a perfect, beautiful and healthy little girl.  This illusion lasted less than a month.

It’s hard enough becoming a mother, either for the first time, or adding another to your already balanced family life. For me, it was my first pregnancy, and after battling infertility and going through several rounds of IVF, I was finally pregnant, at the tender young age of 41. My due date was 12 FEB 2010, so you can imagine my shock when I delivered my son, all 2lbs 5oz of him the day after Thanksgiving 2009.

Once your baby starts moving, it is important to baby proof. Baby proofing will provide your child with more freedom to move about the house safely. Experts recommend baby proofing on your knees to see things from your baby’s point of view. Here are some simple ways to help prevent injuries in your home.

Are you preparing for a little one on the way? One of the most enjoyable experiences when expecting is preparing the nursery. When determining a nursery theme, moms have told us that their starting point is the room focal point – the crib. But did you know that those often gorgeous cribs with fluffy blankets, pillows and bumpers in catalogs and showrooms aren’t safe for baby?

When my first son was born, I was pretty clueless about what a baby really needed. Sure, you buy things like body suits, diapers, and a crib, but then there are those things that you’re “supposed” to have, like a wipe warmer (really??) and crib bumpers. Isn’t your crib, the superstar of the nursery (second of course to the baby), supposed to look cute?  It turns out that those bumpers aren’t so safe for your wee one, particularly when they start moving about in the crib.
