You will know exactly what your baby is eating, and that the ingredients are fresh and healthy. Keep in mind that making your own baby food doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Start with just one fruit or vegetable and see how it goes.

There are many benefits to breastfeeding, both for you as a mother and for your child. Breastfeeding is a very natural thing to do, but can also be intimidating and challenging. You can start by taking a class and doing research while pregnant to prepare yourself for breastfeeding. If possible, breastfeed your baby as soon as you can. The nurses can help you with any questions you might have. And your hospital will also have a lactation consultant available if you need additional help or are having any problems. Don’t hesitate to ask for help. The sooner you can establish a good nursing routine the better, and it is easiest when you are at the hospital with professionals just down the hall.

Bringing Baby on Vacation

Traveling with a baby can be pretty scary for many parents. I know that as a first time mom, when I travelled to Asia to visit family with my then 1 year old daughter four years ago, I didn’t know what to expect. To be honest, I prepared for the worst and hoped for the best on that trip. I was pretty lucky because we flew the red eye and my daughter ended up sleeping 12 out of the 15 hours we were on that plane. Now, as a mother of two, the idea of traveling overseas with 2 little ones wasn’t exactly appealing to me.

Making a trip to the local swimming pool is a must, also celebrating the 4th of July, likely with fireworks. The sweltering heat of July and August can make most families long for a little time away from real life. And every year, families pile into their vehicle for the quintessential road trip.

Some parents find out the gender of their baby at the 20 weeks ultrasound, while some prefer to wait until the baby is born. Either way, all new parents are anxious to find out whether it’s a boy or girl! There are many old wives tales and theories to suggest one gender or another; Have fun thinking about these, but know that there is no scientific proof!

How Can I Protect My Newborn from Germs?

Newborns do not have a fully developed immune system, so it is important to take extra precautions to protect them from germs. Babies are generally protected from germs by the antibodies they receive through the placenta, and during birth they receive a coat of special germs from their mother to help develop their immune system. Reasonable exposure to germs strengthens an immune system, but babies need to build up the resistance to germs gradually and need extra protection for up to a year, especially for the first 3 months.

Nurses Help Families Heal, Too

As I wrote in my earlier post, I had a fragile child. Yep, that’s “had” – I am relieved (and thankful!) to say that Rachel’s fragile years appear to be well behind her. These days, the chatter in our house is all about graduation, summer plans and prom dress shopping – a far cry from the lab results, doctor appointments and medication scheduling that monopolized the conversation 17 years ago. My daughter’s future promises to be bright and healthy. This is due, in no small part, to the talent and commitment of a small army of dedicated, compassionate nurses who kept Rachel alive, me sane, and my family together during those dark days before, during and after her transplant.

When my first son was born, I was pretty clueless about what a baby really needed. Sure, you buy things like body suits, diapers, and a crib, but then there are those things that you’re “supposed” to have, like a wipe warmer (really??) and crib bumpers. Isn’t your crib, the superstar of the nursery (second of course to the baby), supposed to look cute? It turns out that those bumpers aren’t so safe for your wee one, particularly when they start moving about in the crib.

Eczema from a Child's Point of View

Do you have a little one that suffers from eczema or sensitive skin? It’s clear for a parent of little one’s with sensitive skin that they feel uncomfortable with the consistent scratching, irritation and redness. But, what do children with Eczema really feel about it? Our friends at the National Eczema Association surveyed some children of various ages at a recent conference and asked them to express their thoughts about Eczema. Here’s what they said in their own words.

Raising a Fragile Child: Raise a child, not an invalid

When our daughter, Rachel, was born, it was the culmination of a dream -- and a lot of hard work. Not just the labor (which was hard enough!); my husband and I had also spent six long, frustrating and emotionally exhausting years waging war against infertility in order to start our family. That day, holding my new baby in my arms, I felt profoundly thankful that I was finally blessed with a perfect, beautiful and healthy little girl. This illusion lasted less than a month.

Infant and Childhood Eczema: Frequently Asked Questions

There's nothing quite like the soft, delicate skin of a baby. And nothing like a cranky infant irritated by eczema, diaper rash, dermatitis, or another skin condition. While your baby is perfect, your baby's skin may not be. Many babies are prone to skin irritation in the first few months after birth. Our friends at the National Eczema Association shared with us a list of frequently asked questions about Eczema and sensitive skin that we thought you might find helpful.

Helping Siblings Adjust to a New Baby

When our second child was born on March 13th 2012, we wondered how our three and a half year old son would react and anticipated that things would be hard for a while. We were right. While he has been very interested and loving towards his baby sister, his overall behavior and development has been out-of-whack. Immediately after returning home from the hospital, we had days of temper tantrums and emotional break-downs.

Mommy Must-Haves

One of the most daunting tasks as a mother-to-be is figuring out all the stuff you need. Sure, all you really need is food, a place to sleep, clothes, diapers and a car seat, but what about all those other nice-to-haves? The retailers are certainly very helpful at suggesting products to add to your registry list, but when it comes down to it, what do you really need beyond the obvious essentials?

As the founder of HALO Innovations and a SIDS father, I am excited to launch our very own blog! As many of your already know, I lost my daughter to SIDS in 1991 and have committed my life to raising awareness about safe sleep for babies to prevent other parents from experiencing the same unimaginable loss of a child. It is my intention that this blog – Crib Notes – will serve as a resource for parents, grandparents and caregivers of babies and toddlers.
