Parents across the globe are adjusting to new norms - working from home, homeschooling children, and adapting quickly to dramatic changes in daily life. During these challenging times, it’s beneficial for you and your baby to stick to routines, especially when it comes to bedtime.
Recently, HALO® partnered with Johnson’s Baby at a Tub Talks events focused around “Demystifying Infant Sleep.” During the event, Dr. Jodi Mindell, Associate Director of the Sleep Center at Children’s Hospital Philadelphia, offered several sleep recommendations, which we’ve summarized:
1. Adhere to a regularly scheduled bedtime before 9 pm.
2. Develop a consistent bedtime routine.
Your routine should include the same 3 - 4 steps every night and last about 30 – 45 minutes in total. These steps should be quiet activities like a warm bath, giving baby a relaxing massage, or singing a lullaby. After a few nights, your baby will start to associate these activities with bedtime.
3. Let baby fall asleep independently.
It may be tempting to hold or rock your baby to sleep. But it’s best for them to learn how to fall asleep on their own. If your baby is used to rocking or being held, you can make this a more gradual change.
4. Adhere to safe sleep best practices.
Follow the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendations for safe sleep.

Dr. Mindell also shared an interesting, encouraging fact about bedtime routines: they are dose dependent. That means that each time you go through your bedtime routine, baby sleeps better, with fewer and shorter wake-ups during the night. (Yes, please!) Making time for a bedtime routine even one more night per week can have a huge impact.
