How to Practice Safe-Sleep Habits While Traveling

Preparing for a trip with baby in tow?

Whether this is your first trip together or one of many, travel can present a variety of new (and often stressful) situations to navigate. Here are five safe-sleep tips to help keep baby safe, happy and comfortable while on the go:

Car Travel

No overnight sleep in car seats.

While it’s fine for baby to fall asleep in their car seat during a long drive, be sure to transfer them to a safe, flat surface once you reach your destination. Sleeping upright or on an incline can cause baby’s head to roll forward, interfering with their breathing.

Remember, for overnight sleep, back is best.

Overnight Stays

Give baby their own space to sleep.

Don’t co-sleep! Even for short stays at a hotel or a relative’s home where individual beds may be scarce, make certain your baby has their own separate sleep space. Consider bringing the  HALO® DreamNest™ with you, a simple solution for safe sleep on the go. This portable system conveniently folds into its own carrying case for tucking away in the car or checking with your luggage.

Family Traditions

Avoid “heirloom” cribs and sleeping advice.

As cherished as family traditions may be, your parents’ and relatives’ well-meaning advice and heirloom furniture might not meet the American Academy of Pediatrics’ standards for safe sleep. Read the  AAP’s guidelines here.

Staying Warm

Avoid loose blankets.

Of course, you’ll want to make sure baby is warm and comfortable, but loose blankets can pose a suffocation risk. Our  SleepSack® wearable blankets are a great, safe sleep option for babies ages newborn to toddler. They come in a variety of adorable prints and fabrics for every temperature, and they can’t be kicked off overnight.

Smoking or Vaping

Keep baby away from smoking environments.

It may seem obvious, but both cigarette and “vape” smoke can negatively affect baby’s breathing. Request a smoke-free room at hotels and ask that relatives who smoke do so in a designated area outside of the home.

Whether at home or on the go, your baby’s sleep safety is our top priority. We hope these tips help you practice safe sleep habits wherever your travels take you.
