The Risks of Swaddling

When parents first see a baby all wrapped up tight in a blanket, they sometimes start to wonder, “Is swaddling safe for newborns?” It 100% is! Although, like anything with babies there are safe and unsafe ways to swaddle. Below are some risks that can occur when incorrectly swaddling your little one:

  • Overheating: if a swaddle is too tight or made of heavy, non-breathable material, the swaddle can trap heat. Limited air circulation within the swaddle can lead to excess heat buildup.
  • Hip Dysplasia: if a swaddle is wrapped too tightly around the hips or restricts the baby's leg movement, it can increase the risk of hip dysplasia.
  • SIDS: if a swaddle is too tight or covers the baby's face or is not made of a lightweight material, swaddling can increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome.
  • Overstretching of the Baby's Legs: if a baby swaddle is wrapped too tightly or restricts leg movement, it can increase the risk of hip joint issues.

Swaddling Safety Guidelines

When it comes to swaddling, it is important to follow safety guidelines to make sure your little baby burrito is comfortable and safe. Below are some guidelines to follow:

  1. Use a lightweight breathable fabric: choose a fabric that is lightweight, thin, and breathable, to prevent overheating and ensure proper air circulation around the baby. The best baby swaddle fabric (at least we think so!) is cotton muslin.
  2. Leave the face uncovered: always make sure the swaddle does not cover the baby's face. The baby needs to be able to breathe freely and have unrestricted access to air.
  3. Maintain proper hip positioning: allow enough room for the baby's legs to move and flex naturally. The swaddle should not be too tight around the baby's hips.
  4. Avoid overdressing: take into account the room temperature and dress your baby appropriately underneath the swaddle. Overdressing can lead to overheating.
  5. Know when it's time to stop swaddling: as your baby grows and starts showing signs of rolling over, it's time to transition away from swaddling. Rolling over while swaddled can increase the risk of suffocation or other accidents.
  6. Monitor your baby: regularly check on your baby to ensure they are comfortable and not too warm. Look for signs of overheating, such as sweating or flushed skin.

Alternatives to Swaddling

Swaddling can be difficult for parents to learn to do. If you prefer not to swaddle your baby or if swaddling doesn't work for your baby, there are alternatives to help promote comfort and sleep!

  • Sleepsacks: also known as wearable blankets or baby sleeping bags, sleepsacks are a great alternative to swaddling because they provide a cozy, secure feeling without restricting baby's movement.
  • Easy Swaddle Wraps: if a swaddle blanket was not for you or your little, we recommend trying an easy swaddle wrap! They take the guesswork out of swaddling with adjustable hook and loop fasteners, creating a snug, womb-like coziness.
  • Footed Pajamas: these one-piece garments cover the baby's entire body and typically have enclosed feet, providing warmth and comfort throughout the night. They are also easy for parents to use for those late-night diaper changes!
  • Baby Sleep Gowns: sleep gowns are designed to provide a cozy and secure sleeping environment for your little one. Generally made with super stretchy material, baby sleep gowns also have room for movement, reducing the risk of hip dysplasia.
