When it comes to setting up your nursery changing station, the location you choose is paramount. It's not just about convenience; it's also about safety and creating a space that works seamlessly for both you and your baby.

First and foremost, consider the proximity to the crib. Late-night diaper changes are inevitable, so having the changing station within easy reach of the crib ensures a smooth transition from changing to soothing your baby back to sleep without stumbling through the nursery in the dark. Adequate lighting and ventilation are essential too, as proper illumination helps during diaper changes, and good airflow helps dissipate any odors.

Safety is paramount, so avoid locations near hazardous elements like window cords or heat sources.

Baby Changing Station Essentials

• Diapers and Wipes: We’ll keep bringing it up until we’re confident we’ve relayed the magnitude of the enterprise you’re about to embark on. Yes, things are about to get crazy! Don’t be caught without diapers or wipes at the ready.
• Diaper Pail: Dirty diapers are no joke, and the average newborn will likely need to be changed between 8 and 12 times per day. There will be smells and there will be messes, so it’s best to be prepared. A hands-free diaper pail that blocks odor is great. Even better? One that’s hands-free.
• Changing Pad and Cover: A good changing pad should provide comfort and security with an easy-to-clean material. Look for a changing pad that has contoured sides and the option to strap baby in. Then top it with an aden + anais cover that’s both beautiful and soft.
• Grooming and First Aid Kit: As you will see (and perhaps you already know), the changing station is a sort of home base for all things baby. Whether changing diapers and outfits, clipping nails or combing hair, you’ll want to keep all grooming and first aid essentials within reach.
• Creams and Lotions: From soothing irritated bums to caring for newborn belly buttons, you’ll want to have an assortment creams and lotions on hand.

• Invest in shelves, drawers, or baskets to keep essentials neatly organized and within arm's reach. Shelves can hold diapers, wipes, and creams, while drawers can store extra baby clothes and supplies. Baskets are perfect for small items like pacifiers and teething toys.
• Group similar items together and label them for quick identification. Having a designated spot for diapers, wipes, and baby care products not only streamlines the process but also makes it easier for others helping with diaper changes to find what they need.
• Periodically go through the items in your changing station to remove outgrown clothing, expired creams, or items you no longer need. This practice helps keep the space clutter-free and efficient.

Safety in the Changing Station Area

• Ensuring the safety of your nursery changing station is paramount to protect both your baby and your peace of mind.
• If your changing station includes a dresser or other furniture pieces, be sure to anchor them securely to the wall. Babies can be surprisingly strong as they grow, and they may try to pull themselves up using the changing table.

• Ensure that your changing pad has a non-slip surface to prevent your baby from sliding or slipping during diaper changes.
• Never leave your baby unattended on the changing table, even for a moment. Diaper changes are quick, but accidents can happen in an instant.
